Google set to turn cars into another Android device

We can as well add the car to the list of mobile devices we own because, by the end of the year, some vehicle models would now be powered by the android automotive operations system. This means that all Google Apps and devices would run in them just like it does on mobile phone.

The first launch of this innovation would take place in 10 models of Volvo, GM, Renault and Polestar cars. The tech powerhouse is said to be creating a platform to help third-party developers move their navigation, EV charging, parking and media apps directly to a car’s screen easily.

During Google’s annual developer conference, which was held on Tuesday, it was revealed that the Android for Cars App library will now support the Android automotive operating system. The Android for cars software library is a smartphone application that was created by Google to enable your car’s dashboard to serve as your mobile Android phone. It used to be available as part of Jetpack but would now work directly with the Android Automotive operating system.

This comes as good news for developers skilled in the development of hybrid android applications (i.e. Apps that are compatible with different platforms) in this case: Android OS and Android Auto. Now, developers can create one app that would work perfectly with different car models.

Still, in the conference on Tuesday, Google said they were already working with automobile focused mobile application partners such as Parkwhiz, Sygic, ChargePoint, Flitsmeister, Plugshare and SpotHero to name a few, to bring their apps in to be powered by the Android Automotive OS.

The Difference Between Android Automotive OS and Android Auto

There is a clear difference between these two Softwares.

Android Auto resides as an app in a smartphone. The application can either be run directly on the phone or by plugging the phone into an Android Auto compatible head unit. Then it automatically calls all of the “compatible” android applications from the phone to the dash screen of the vehicle. This way, the driver can use android applications in their cars like they would on a phone.

While Android Automotive runs directly on the vehicle’s infotainment system. This creates a direct full-on Android OS experience rather than having to create the android interface using a phone. Android Automotive OS is built as an open-source mobile operating system that runs on Linux. Google made it this way so that automobile manufacturers can easily install them directly in their cars.

These automakers have, however, partnered with the tech powerhouse to ensure that the native automobile Operating system has all of the essential Google services, such as Google Assistant, Google Maps, and the Google Play Store.

Today, third party developers can easily make use of the Android For Car App Library to create and push their apps to the play store. This makes it easy to use regular apps like Sound Cloud and Spotify as easy as you would on your phone.
